The Palio is not an event added to Siena; it is the city's calendar made visible. Ten of the seventeen contrade — the medieval districts that still organise civic life, from feasts to fireworks — run in each race, seven by rotation and three drawn by lot. Horses are assigned to districts by lottery on the festival's first day, and bareback riders then race three laps of a tuff-covered Piazza del Campo for a painted silk banner dedicated to the Madonna of Provenzano.
What happens during the four festival days?
After the June 29 horse lottery, each district runs six trial heats, the prove, morning and evening, while the contrade hold their formal dinners in the streets — long tables under banners where districts sing their anthems and their rivals' insults. The day of the race opens with the Corteo Storico, a procession of several hundred costumed figures, before the horses enter the piazza around 7 p.m.

Yes — the centre of the piazza is free and opens from the morning, though shade and views go early in July heat; balcony and stand seating is sold by districts and agencies. Booking layers months ahead, as it does every year, and the city's museums offer quieter refuge during the trial heats.
The race runs whatever the weather, and it has been postponed only in the rarest cases; a July afternoon in the piazza regularly pushes past ninety degrees, which is why the trials are scheduled for the edges of the day and the crowd arrives with water bottles hours in advance.
